"Our new album Life After Football is out November 25. It’s been a long time coming, trying to record around lockdowns and shut downs and everything else was tough but we’re so happy with what we’ve made and are very excited to show you! This album is more defiant than depressed, more upbeat than down trodden and is inspired by a search for meaning and what’s next. We’ve all lived through a once in a lifetime event, some of us have lived through multiple once in a lifetime events, and it can be hard to come to terms with what we’ve been through and what comes next. But hopefully this summer feels like summers past and this album helps with that feeling a little."

South of Heaven, West of Hell
Set in singer and multi-instrumentalist Stu Folsom’s apocalyptic, vision of the American West, SpiritWorld is metal at its most rustic and blood drenched. Think Slayer and Pantera getting into a bar fight while gunslingers battle demonic entities amidst tomahawk like riffs. SpiritWorld emerged in 2017 as a musical outlet for Folsom’s love of punk, outlaw country and metal, taking a decidedly outlaw roots punk bent. Yet, it was with the full-metal direction of the initially self-released Pagan Rhythms, (re-released in 2021 through SpiritWorld's new label home, Century Media) that won the band international acclaim. Daniel Carter, BBC 1 DJ and curator of The Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter, as well as the likes of Exodus/Slayer guitarist Gary Holt and former Sepultura/current Soulfly leader Max Cavalera sang the album’s praises on their social media, discovering the band on word-of-mouth alone. Folsom and his gang debuted their live show at Decibel magazine’s Los Angeles Metal and Beer Festival in December 2021, and immediately followed it up with a run in the States with Obituary, Municipal Waste, Gatecreeper and Enforced. In 2022 SpiritWorld’s dusty trail of riffs and murder ballads continued to Seattle’s Northwest Terror Fest, the UK’s Bloodstock Open Air, Czech’s Brutal Assault and Psycho Las Vegas ripping apart stages and saloons at every turn. Unrepentant and unforgiven is putting it mildly.

1. Mourning - Disenlightenment (United kingdom)
Genre: Metallic Hardcore Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3ETfEcDsM21qIaGVzJdNUp?si=X6Axdl2fTcOZdVproSgE9Q
UK metallic hardcore band Mourning have unleashed Disenlightenment, their new album out today on Streets of Hate. Mourning’s mix of influences shine throughout the eight tracks on the album, drawing from ‘90s upstate New York metallic hardcore, UK death metal and Scandanavian black metal. There’s plenty of heavy moments fixated on the band’s substantial guitar work, but also moment’s on reprieve that lean into more haunting territory. Tracks like “Cancer Incarnate” and “Desert Of The Spirit” are begging for some serious headbanging, while closer “Grievance Ascends” showcases the band’s more technical abilities. Disenlightenment itself comes as a concept album as a commentary of the society we live in. Connor expands:“The overarching theme of ‘Disenlightenment’ is of distrust, exhaustion and contempt of living in the modern western world. The debate of the west being in decline is a centuries old concept but it feels an entirely relevant concept right now when you want to talk about modern politics, culture, environment, social norms etc. Whether that’s the constant economic downturns, waning tolerance of opposing ideas, an unrepresentative political system, lack of cultural significance in the endless streams of content, an increasingly inhospitable environment, ideological fanaticism and zealotry etc. To put it simply, it feels like the sun is setting on the western empire.” Disenlightenment was self-recorded and produced by the band at Audiolounge studios in Glasgow, UK, and was then mixed by Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording in Chicago, IL and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege in Portland, OR.

Genre: Metalcore Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0Z88iXWc4YVhtu1eFtsGk6?si=VVCy39LkTzOS3n4Vo90LFw
Unrestricted by genre conventions and determined to raise the bar with each successive album, WOLVES AT THE GATE deliver music and a message with a firm commitment to passion and authenticity. Tirelessly seeking out the light in seemingly overwhelming darkness, the Midwestern post-hardcore group balances soaring melodies with unrelenting metal and emotional heaviness. The band’s fifth album, Eulogies, arrives with confidence and forward motion born from reflection, introspection, and isolation. The small-town Ohio-based five-piece band built the foundations for the album’s 13 songs during the pandemic shutdown, shaping diverse tracks like “Shadows,” “Peace That Starts The War,” and “No Tomorrow” into stunning confessional epics. Wolves At The Gate’s audience treasures each of the band’s best-known songs for the emotional depth, passionate catharsis, and evocative power contained in them, as evidenced by the millions of streams for WATG anthems. These include “Counterfeit,” “A Voice in the Violence,” and “Drifter” (from 2019’s Eclipse); “Asleep,” “Flickering Flame,” and “War in the Time of Peace” (from 2016’s Types & Shadows); “Relief,” and “The Bird and the Snake” (from 2014’ VxV); “Dead Man,” “The Harvest,” and “Slaves” (from 2012’s Captors), and “Heralds” (from 2011’s We Are The Ones). Wolves At The Gate blaze a path combining seemingly disparate elements into a singular, cohesive identity.

Don’t Know What You’re In Until You’re Out marks the first Gladie production with a set band lineup, a feature which was previously hampered by the pandemic. As a result, the LP leans into Gladie’s live energy and dynamics, moving away from the home-recorded keys and drum machines of their 2020 debut Safe Sins.Koch recorded Don’t Know What You’re In Until You’re Out at The Bunk in early 2022 with Matt Schimelfenig (guitar, keyboard, vocals), Pat Conaboy (guitar), Dennis Mishko (bass), and Miles Ziskind (drums). Schimelfenig also recorded and mixed the record, while Ryan Schwabe mastered. Mark Glick (cello), Mike Park (saxophone), and Brian Lockerm (trumpet) guest across four tracks.

That there’s light at the end of the tunnel is a cliché often rolled out to those going through a bad time. But what if that’s not true? What if the darkness of that tunnel just stretches on forever and there is no light, no salvation, no hope? Because those are the circumstances of We Are Alive Beyond Repair, the third full-length album from New Jersey’s Gatherers – sonically and lyrically, it’s a bleak, brutal, nihilistic record that’s shrouded in such despair and anguish that there’s no chance whatsoever for escape. And that’s just how the five-piece like it. “We wanted this album to be as ugly and as horribly truthful as possible,” explains vocalist Rich Weinberger. “It has this very human but flawed connotation to it. It’s very pessimistic. I was reading a lot of Sylvia Plath at the time we were writing this record and I just like that the fabric of our existence is very meek and it’s dull and, no matter what, nothing will ever get better. That was the angle I wanted to explore with this record. It’s the idea of being just being completely unfulfilled, that no matter how much time we put into this band it’ll never be self-fulfilling.”

Since forming in the early '90s, Envy have become one of Japan's premier exports to the international post-hardcore scene. Their experimental, cinematic approach to heavy melodic rock has made them a favorite of post-rock and alternative metal fans, and their intense, emotionally direct VOcals and lyrics have wNon them accolades in the emo Screamo worlds as well. Envy have toured with Mogwai, Isis, and Explosions in the Sky, and have released split EPs with Jesu, Thursday, and Yaphet Kotto. The group's lineup has generally consisted of members Tetsuya Fukagawa (vocals/programming), Nobukata Kawai (guitar), Manabu Nakagawa (bass), Masahiro Tobita (guitar), and Dairoku Seki (drums), although other members played drums on the group's earliest recordings.

Formed by composer Mark Jansen after leaving After Forever back in 2002, Epica quickly gained attention outside their home country, taking big steps towards becoming the leading symphonic metal superpower they have long proven to be. On their past seven records so far, they soared from gothic undertones to a broad, epic and triumphant amalgamation of all things monolithic, establishing their unique brand of Simone Simons’ unparalleled vocal excellence with a band both ready to tear down venues around the globe while at the same time installing orchestral splendour, progressive elegance, oriental enchantment, cinematic soundscapes and colossal fury into their trailblazing bombshell sound.
3. Jordana - I'm Doing Well, Thanks For Asking (EP) (New York, New York)
Genre: Bedroom Pop Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5Bw9kFNhy019e4IBCJZlzw?si=lEwEn1-ESZeA_D5gwjAQ-A
On her new EP, I'm Doing Well, Thanks For Asking, Jordana is getting to know herself again. Or more accurately: getting to know her selves. It's fair to say the 22-year-old New York songwriter has shifted shape a few times in her short career. She got her start with homespun indie folk on Classical Notions of Happiness before jumping to the spindly bedroom pop of Something To Say To You. A year later, she was veering into the dreamy haze of her TV Girl collaboration Summer's Over, before eventually giving way to the hi-gloss pop of Face The Wall. It's the kind of omnivorous output the phrase something for everyone was invented for. Along the way she's managed to make fans of Wallows, Local Natives & Remi Wolf, who've each taken her on the road in 2022, landing her in front of crowds that number in the thousands. In many ways, the magic carpet ride of touring that opened up post-pandemic hasn't allowed Jordana the time to fully change forms again. Instead she's synthesized a little bit of everything that came before on this new six song short-player. And while the overall sound pulls from each of her past releases, the songs themselves remain obsessed with love and neuroses, being left and leaving, pitying yourself and learning to stop. “SYT,” the EP’s lead single, is a soaring kiss-off from a jilted lover. "It channels the feelings of empowerment and emotional awareness after a tough breakup," says Jordana. It wouldn’t sound out of place on Face The Wall, and certainly borrows from her most recent album’s logline advice of overcoming hardships. Elsewhere, on "You're In The Way," Jordana reaches back to the leathery indie pop of Something To Say To You's "Reason" & "I Guess This Is Life." It’s a song built around a simple drum loop, guitar strums and Jordana's voice. "It’s about getting to know yourself again after seemingly wasting time investing in someone else," says Jordana. Then, of course, there’s “Careless Mistake,” which updates the hushed folk of Classical Notions, increasing the fidelity and trading in her uke for a piano and a spotlight. It sounds like a song from some future collection of ballads. Which shouldn’t be surprising, the ever shape-shifting Jordana, already aware of some new form still yet to emerge.

North Carolina rock act He Is Legend are renowned for being much of what inspires them, a cult classic. The band formed in 2000, as its members were graduating from high school in Wilmington, North Carolina. Singer Schuylar Croom, lead guitarist Adam Tanbouz, rhythm guitarist McKenzie Bell, bassist Matt Williams, and drummer Steven Bache cycled through a variety of band names and musical approaches before establishing themselves as He Is Legend. After a self-released demo, A Kiss That Killed the One We Love (No One Wins), the band signed with the small indie label Tribunal Records to release their first EP, 91025, in the summer of 2004. Shortly after, He Is Legend signed with the more established Solid State Records to release their critically acclaimed full-length debut, I Am Hollywood, later the same year. After a two-year break, He Is Legend returned with their second full-length, Suck Out the Poison, in the fall of 2006. In May 2009 the band issued the single "The Primarily Blues," in anticipation of the release of their third studio long-player It Hates You. By the end of that summer, the band had gone on an indefinite hiatus. In February 2014, they dropped "Something Witchy," the first single from their next full-length, Heavy Fruit, which arrived later that August via Tragic Hero. Few, the band's entirely crowd-funded fifth long-player, followed in April 2017 after the band signed with Spinefarm Records. Their forthcoming LP White Bat is expected in 2019.

Laden with haunting melodies and cryptic vocals, Nordicwinter sets out to drive back into the wombs from whence they came from, those false souls who today haunt the black metals scene like paint by numbers specters. Genre: Future Bass/ Hip Hop /House/ EDM / Dance Music Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5Dccem9dkRqim9eKHXkSd3?si=MS4YXSv5SXSOWU1TDG181Q
Currently 23 years old, BUNNY started DJing at the young age of 17. In the 4th year of his musical career and only 2 months into his journey in music production, his remix "BTS - Fake Love (BUNNY Remix)", uploaded to SoundCloud, was played by Zedd at Ultra Korea 2018, making him an international sensation overnight and leading to his “Billboard Best BTS Remixer” award.
Attracting interest in the past on social media as Japan’s rising "high-school student DJ", he commands a loyal following from a younger crowd---the connections he has built up with them is like no others in his generation---while at the same time, earning a strong reputation amongst professionals in the music industry for his strong ability to produce the most in-demand and innovative sounds. His sound is heavily influenced by 2000’s emo/pop punk rock, emo rap and metal, infusing these elements into throbbing future bass and club-ready electro anthems. Using his background as a former guitarist/bass player in a rock band, he has established a style that seamlessly incorporates these elements into his music. His most recent collaborations include global features by Italian singer Becko on “Sick Hearted”, American singer Max Landry on “Our Love”, and Canadian singer SayWeCanFly on his most recent single “Embrace”, and he hopes to engage with a wider and more global audience through his refined and edgy sound.

Genre: mathcore Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/11YhymLrmHxQsN7cynBfEL?si=Tijrg2zkSoG_4H77LEXrkA
Chaotic New York grinders The Sawtooth Grin released just one album during their initial 1999-2004 run, 2001's Cuddlemonster, along with some other miscellaneous stuff, and though their existence was brief and relatively obscure, they've influenced a lot of the weirdo heavy shit that's come out over the past few years, especially the stuff that's usually associated with the mathcore and "sasscore" genres. This makes the timing perfect for what The Sawtooth Grin have just done: they've just released their first new album in 21 years! It's called Good., and it is indeed good. They're pretty much doing the same thing they were doing back in the day, but they sound sharper and tighter now than they did back then. And that we're getting this three days after the first Dr. Acula album in three years? What a time to be alive.

Since the age of 14, Cavetown has created self-produced songs both intensely diaristic and touched with offbeat imagination. Now 23, the Cambridge-based artist, otherwise known as Robin Skinner, has emerged as one of the preeminent voices in the DIY bedroom pop scene, with more than 1 billion global streams to date, including nearly 8 million monthly Spotify listeners and over 2 million YouTube subscribers. He did so without a viral hit or easy gimmicks, but rather pure heart, filling his YouTube channel and Bandcamp with a mix of covers and original music he wrote and self-recorded in his bedroom. With the release of his 2018 breakthrough album Lemon Boy, Skinner’s unassuming yet captivating personality took the internet by storm, catapulting him become a go-to collaborator for bedroom pop mainstays mxmtoon, Chloe Moriondo, and Tessa Violet, plus selling out major venues across the U.S. and U.K. as well as taking the stage at leading festivals like Lollapalooza and Reading & Leeds. In 2020, he unveiled his major label debut album, SLEEPYHEAD, followed by his most critically-acclaimed EP to date, Man’s Best Friend, which earned global praise from the likes of The New York Times, The FADER, Rolling Stone, Billboard, CLASH Magazine, and many more upon its release earlier this year.

After several years of hard-nosed touring throughout North America and Europe (including impressive showings on the final cross-country Vans Warped Tour) the Southern California natives returned to home and establish their new sound in familiar territory. Entering the studio with budding producer and close personal friend, Daniel Braunstein, the band embraces a uniquely Los Angeles sound - showcasing decades of influence all wrapped within the band’s core identity. From opening track to closing note, it’s clear that the band has discarded what may have been expected and instead chosen to embrace something most artists struggle to ever find: themselves. - Garrett Russell

Genre: Death Metal Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0EziqO4Mehje1x6hA1Fg2m?si=bxftYzveRJKzci3aDQpkPQ
UK death metal titans Ingested have been churning out bilious anti-anthems for more than a decade and a half, dropping a string of releases that have helped shape the genre. In 2022, they return with Ashes Lie Still, their most dynamic, inventive and daring release to date, holding nothing back, the band describing it as “A modern essential. If you like heavy music, it will be nigh on impossible for you to not find something you like about this record. It still has the core Ingested elements of groovy slamming riffs, quick drumming, and guttural vocals but there's also atmosphere, ethereal moments and some raw old school aggression.” Over the course of ten tracks they hack, slash and steamroll through everything in their path, and it easily stands as the highpoint of an already impressive career.

Genre: Black Metal Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1cM8mJWhWU9X0w4wpoQAQI?si=bPNNY_O6TsSbr0YkT5YqQA
New York City has always served as a cultural epicentre for musical innovation. Even more so than incubating genres in their infancy such as hardcore and even glam metal, for which bands like Twisted Sister and KISS long set the stage before the Sunset Strip took the reigns, the empire state has a storied and unique history of taking genres whose roots lie elsewhere and making them its own; whether it be Anthrax reinventing Bay Area thrash, Suffocation and Immolation planting their flag as death metal purveyors at a time when it was a primary export of Florida, or bands like Blondie and the Ramones rivalling the British punk scene, the city has always been at the forefront of musical excellence. And when it comes to New York’s answer to black metal, Black Anvil have not only been a driving force for USBM, but have taken the black metal genre as a whole and made it entirely their own. Now, with full-length number five, the band has once again levelled up their game, presenting a “Regenesis” of black metal. Now, nearly six years after As Was made its mark, Black Anvil is returning with its aptly titled fifth full-length, “Regenesis”. With a new record label, a new album, and a newfound exploration of dark and black metal, “Regenesis” represents a new dawn for the New York City collective.

Genre: Alternative/Rock Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6P5ccCJCe8A4s9tDSTNFzF?si=MObbAoBCR46a6UBO0JLZ4Q
Fleshwater, the grunge-gaze band with members of Vein.fm, will follow their 2020 demo with their Kurt Ballou-recorded debut album, We're Not Here To Be Loved, via Closed Casket Activities. Its nine songs include "Linda Claire" from the demo, as well as the just-released lead single "Kiss The Ladder." Compared to the slower Deftones/Hum vibes of the demo, this new song's a much punchier, poppier take on the genre and kinda feels like Swervedriver or Catherine Wheel at their catchiest, but with Fleshwater's own, modern twist.
